Double multiphase separator for separation
of methyl ester and glycerine
|
|
Process Technology
The MPT multiphase
separators remove droplets
as small as
10 µm in
diameter from liquid mixtures and can be adapted
to
all operating conditions. Compact design,
maintenance-free
operation
and low cost of operation
are the hallmarks of these
systems.
Due to its unique operating
principle the multiphase
separator
operates without
loss of pressure and is also
suitable for the
separation of
heavy dispersed phases
and/or solids.
The separation efficiency
depends on the distance
between the
phase
separation profiles as well
as on the number and
configuration
of the profile
rows.
An intelligent modular system
permits customer-specific
solutions
for pressure
vessels and unpressurized
rectangular vessels of any
size and material. |

Environmental Engineering
The MPT multiphase
separator removes mineral
oils and
other organic light
liquids from water and
effluent, and even
from
spent acids and lyes.
If the liquids are
contaminated with solids,
the particles are
separated
in the gaps between the
rows of profiles and are
deposited on the vessel
bottom - the efficiency is maintained
in any case.
Used in combination with
an appropriate removal
system, the
multiphase
separators are also
employed as efficient solids
separators. |

Technology
The MPT multiphase separators
make use of
- Gravity separation
- Droplet coalescence
- Flow effects
to separate dispersed
phases from a liquid flow.
Separation is achieved at
zero-pressure flow through
rows of
special angular
phase separation profiles.
The dispersed phase may
consist of droplets and/or
solid particles.
The specific
gravity of the droplets may
be lower or higher than that
of the main phase.
The sloping profile surfaces
ensure that the separated
phases run
off continuously.
The interface is continuously
renewed so that no
interface-active substances
can accumulate.
The separation rate of the
multiphase separator is
defined by the
following
parameters:
- Number of profile rows
- Distance between the
phase separation profiles
- Wetting behaviour of the
profile surface
- Geometry of the profiles
The separation feed can be
defined on the basis of the
sedimentation
time of a two-phase
mixture.
Multiphase separators can
be designed
for
sedimentation times as long
as 240 min.
The resulting flow rate in the phase separation
profiles is 5 to 20 mm/s
and
the profile geometry is
adapted to the flow rate.
For the dimensioning and
calculation of a multiphase
separator, all
relevant
material and process data
as well as the customer-specific
requirements on
the separation rate are
taken into account.
The computer simulation
yields:
- Material and geometry of
the phase separation
profiles
- Flow cross-section and
flow rate
- Number and structure of
the MPT modules
- Inflow distribution at inlet
- Outflow ratios
- Main dimensions of the

Pressure Vessels
For multiphase separators
with pressure vessels, round
MPT modules
are used so
that best use is made of the
existing flow cross-section.
A special handling system
facilitates the installation of
the MPT modules
so that
no function-specific adaptation
work is required upon
installation.
The edge sealing being
essential for the proper
functioning is ensured by
special profile seals (NBR,
FKM, PTFE), which also
serve to compensate
any
expansion of the plastic
phase separation profiles.
Each pressure vessel is
calculated and built in
compliance with the
country-specific regulations.
All known materials and
inner coatings can be used.
In many cases existing vessels/
separators may be upgraded
with fit-to-use MPT
modules without major effort.

Unpressurized Vessels
The multiphase separators
with rectangular,
unpressurized
vessels are
mostly used for effluent
purification. The separated
light phase forms a layer
on the surface and runs off
via height-
adjustable
channels.
The heavy phase is
collected and removed at
the bottom of
the vessel.
The standard series of
multiphase separators is
based on the
modular
dimensions of the MPT
modules.
For each application,
a
special calculation of the
flow and separation rates is
performed.
Just as special are the
customized systems we can
plan and build
to special
requirements.
